Crime Prevention & Safety Tips with Nick Juarez

Strategy (the plan) without tactics (the steps of the plan) is the slowest route to victory; Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat" Sun Tzu's The Art of War

How do you create a safety plan?  Let’s start with the individual.  Conduct a self-assessment of yourself; What are your strengths and weaknesses?  How do you react to stress and fear?  Remember during an incident you will feel a flood of emotions and you need to know how you will react (freeze, flight, fight).  Your reaction will help create your safety plan.

I am excited to share that I have started a new position within the Department of Public Safety as the Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion.  DPS continues to take steps to strengthen the Community Engagement Team and its efforts to reach all communities, especially those that feel marginalized by greater safety, campus, and system organizations.  I hope to continue to build communications opportunities with all communities that have a vested interest in safety at the U of MN.

Q: Is the West Bank (near Carlson and Middlebrook hall) a safe area in the evening?"

A: This is a great question and here are the resources I used to find the answer;

The University of Minnesota West Bank is part of the University and UMPD will be the primary responding agency to the designated campus geography; the surrounding area of the West Bank is located in Precinct 1 - Sector 2 of the Minneapolis Police Department. I attached a photo for reference. The University vs. the City of Minneapolis is separated by the gray box area.

This link is how you can find specific crimes in areas of the city: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/government-data/datasource/crime-dashboard/

Crime can happen anywhere at any time during the day but especially after dark. We encourage everyone to walk in a group or travel with friends. Walking alone at night in any large city can be dangerous.
