As ambassadors of the University of Minnesota, we assist the University Community, the University of Minnesota Police, and our strategic partners in their efforts to protect people and property. We are uniformed, non-sworn representatives of the Department of Public Safety who communicate relevant laws, rules, and policies in support of a safe and secure campus. Our core functions consist of providing Safe-Walks, patrolling buildings, and performing access control.
We have full time staff positions and part time student positions.
Campus Security Advisor
Campus Security Advisors
Campus Security Advisors are uniformed, non-sworn representatives of the Department of Public Safety. Campus Security Advisors provide unarmed security services to the Twin Cites Campus, provide operational guidance to student Security Monitors, and advise members of the University Community regarding safe behaviors, laws, rules, and policies in furtherance of a safe campus and the protection of University assets.
Minimum Qualifications
- Able to pass a background check
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license
- Must complete the following certifications within 30 days of employment
- First aid, CPR, AED (American Heart Association)
- Must meet and maintain requirements for access to law enforcement sensitive information including CJIS Data Access Terminals
Compensation
- Starting at $21.22/hour
- $0.60 shift differential for late evening and overnight shifts

Student Security Monitor
Student Security Monitor
University Security has served the University of Minnesota since 1974 by utilizing student employees to act as the “eyes and ears” for UMPD. Our mission is to serve university students, staff, faculty and visitors by enhancing personal safety, reducing risks and at all times acting as ambassadors of the University of Minnesota.
Minimum Qualifications
- Able to pass a background check
- High School diploma or equivalent
- A valid driver’s license may be required for some shifts
- Must complete the following certifications within 30 days of employment
- First aid, CPR, AED (American Heart Association)

Compensation
- $17.00/hour
- After 260 hours worked, you will receive an additional $1.00 per hour.
- $0.60 shift differential for late evening and overnight shifts

- BA/BS plus at least 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 6 years.
- Availability and willingness to work evenings and weekends to oversee nightly operations
- Able to pass a background check
- Combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six (6) years in law enforcement, security-related field, or management-related field
- Regular attendance is an essential qualification for this position.

Salary Range: $25 - $28/hour
