Special Event Hiring
The University of Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) offers a variety of services for special security needs on the Twin Cities Campus. University of Minnesota departments and organizations may hire UMPD Officers and/or University Security to work events such as dances, parties, seminars/lectures, sporting events, etc. Departments and organizations requesting UMPD officers or University Security will be billed for the service.
In order to ensure the safety of DPS personnel and event attendees, the DPS reserves the right to determine whether Police Officers or University Security are assigned to work an event. For the same reason, the DPS also reserves the right to make the ultimate determination on the number of personnel assigned to your event. Only UMPD Police Officers and University Security can work events on the Twin Cities Campus where a police or security presence is required or desired.
Hiring a Police Officer
UMPD Police Officers are licensed by the State of Minnesota as Peace Officers and they can provide security for an event in which physical intervention may be required, such as a dance, party, or reception where there is a large crowd or an event in which alcohol is being served. Police Officers are also available to provide traffic control for events such as fun runs, bicycle rally's and other events that draw additional vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
Police officer and supervisor services cost a flat rate of $89.00/hour. For example, if you request two officers to work for three hours, you will be charged for six hours of police services. If your event requires more than three police officers, a supervisor will be assigned to the event at the same rate. Each officer or supervisor needs to be hired for a minimum of three (3) hours per event. Be prepared to provide a Fund/Dept ID/Program number or billing address along with the departmental accountant contact information upon request of the service.

Please submit the form at least three weeks prior to your event. If the event is less than two weeks away, complete the request form and call Justin Yarrington at 612-626-1731 to determine whether or not the UMPD is able to provide personnel for the event.
Hiring University Security
University Security provides a security presence to protect such things as equipment, displays, and facilities. They also perform routine patrols, provide access control, and request compliance with University policies. Security Monitors provide an extra set of eyes and ears for UMPD Police personnel. They wear uniforms, and carry radios to communicate with the PSECC 911 Communications Center. Specific job duties and expectations of security monitors are determined on a case by case basis and are mutually agreed upon between the requesting party and University Security.
Permanent Contract Security
University Security services are available for University departments interested in contracting regular recurring services on a long term basis. For staffing reasons, we require that the proposed times of coverage are at least 3.5 hours on-site (customers are charged for on-site time only).

Temporary or Event Security
University Security Services are also available for temporary assignments or special events. If you are planning an event or would like a security monitor on a temporary basis please provide at least two weeks advance notice. Requests without a two week notice will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if staffing is available. For staffing reasons, we require that the proposed times of coverage are at least 3.5 hours on-site (customers are charged for on-site time only).
University Departments: $18.50 per hour
Non-University: $25.00 per hour
