The University of Minnesota Police Department provides police services to Twin Cities campus community across all Twin Cities properties. In partnership with other law enforcement agencies, we also provide service to areas that border our campus.
As a sworn officer, you'll have the unique opportunity to work overtime at special events held on campus, including Gopher sporting events, concerts, and dignitary visits. At these events, you'll earn time and a half, and those earnings are included in the calculation for retirement benefits as part of PERA Police & Fire Plan.

Minimum Qualifications
- Two or four-year degree from an education program certified by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board
- Licensed as a peace officer by the Minnesota POST Board, eligible to be licensed, or able to pass the reciprocity exam by the time of hire
- Pre-employment background investigation, psychological exam, and fitness for duty exam
- Valid U.S. Driver’s license with a good driving record
Compensation
- Hiring bonus: $5,000 (paid in installments over 12 months)
- Starting pay: $32.42/hour ($67,433)
- After 3 years of service: $46.37/hour ($96,449)
- Longevity payments after 4, 10, and 15 years of service
- Uniform allowance: $950
- Premium pay options: shift differential, instructor pay, FTO pay
- Potential to start at a higher step rate for lateral candidates
- Participation in the PERA Police & Fire Plan

Lateral Police Officers
We are currently hiring lateral police officers. Police officers must have at least one year of sworn law enforcement experience. Candidates will participate in an abbreviated field training program and are eligible to be hired at up to the 24 months of service step and receive the 36 month/top police officer rate after 12 months and the successful completion of probation.
