UMPD through (Intern)ational Eyes with Piadamoyo Chikate

Q: What is one thing you have learned about campus policing since you began at UMPD?

A: When I started, I was not aware of the different roles and responsibilities that officers have in the department. Police operating in a campus community have to be involved in physical campus safety but also have to engage with Student & Community Inquiries Click Here students, staff and faculty. Some examples of community engagement work include invitations to sit on panels in the community, parent orientation and events such as National Night Out.

Crime Prevention & Safety Tips with Nick Juarez

Situational Awareness is more than just being aware of your surroundings. Being aware of your surroundings is only part of being situationally aware. It starts with knowing your strengths and weaknesses in your daily routine, knowing the current crime trends and risks in your immediate area, and having a plan on how you will reduce the opportunity of you becoming a victim of a crime or injury and how you will react if you are presented with a challenge or confronted by a person who wants to commit harm against you. The Community Engagement Team is here to assist you with developing a plan and to help you be situationally aware. If you would like a safety presentation or would like to have a meeting with the Community Engagement Team, fill out a request at https://publicsafety.umn.edu/form/request-for-a-community-outreach.
